CAROLS:
A Virgin Unspotted -- Blessed Be That Maid Marie -- This Endris Night (a duet) -- Un Flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle

The theme is, as noted by the title, 18th century music--more specifically, broadside ballads. This collection is not limited to that genre, however. Many of the songs have a fascinating history dating well before the 1700s, and their entertaining historical backgrounds are included, as well as a broad overview of The Beggar's Opera. This comic ballad opera opened in London in 1728 and quickly spread through the Colonies. It continues to be a source of entertainment in today's theaters.

In addition to 11 tunes taken from The Beggar's Opera, the book includes a few gorgeous duets, four beautiful carols, some classical pieces, and several interesting country dance tunes and ballad opera pieces from the collections of John Playford, Thomas D'Urfey, David Garrick, J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach and Johann Krieger.

The arrangements vary in complexity from easy to challenging.
The tunings are all 1-5-8 (i.e. DAd, CGc, GDg) in various keys with and without capo, with one DAc exception. There are 31 songs in all, one of which has two tab arrangements from which to choose, plus the harmony parts for the duets. The book also includes the lyrics for all the tunes for which words were written, and in a few cases multiple sets of lyrics.

Stephen Foster
for Mountain Dulcimer

This book presents fretted dulcimer arrangements of 58 Stephen Collins Foster classics. Each song is written as a melody line in standard notation with dulcimer tablature beneath plus complete lyrics, historical notes, and suggested guitar chords. Cover graphics from the original nineteenth century sheet music publications lend grace and authenticity, and songwriters and music historians will find much of interest in this book. The tunings used are DAD, DAA, DGD, and DAA#D. Intended for experienced beginners to intermediate players, many of these pieces require a 6 1/2 fret dulcimer and a capo.

The author includes an insightful essay on the life of Stephen Foster (1826-1864)- a gifted, once successful songwriter whose career decisions and abuse of alcohol lead to personal financial disaster, a broken family, and an early death. His legacy is a treasury of songs reflecting the social issues and romantic illusions of his time. This spiral-bound volume contains both well-known and lesser known tunes including: Susanna; Nelly Bly; Ring de Banjo; De Camptown Races; My Old Kentucky Home; Old Black Joe; Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair; Old Folks at Home; I'll Be a Soldier; Kissing in the Dark; I'll be Home Tomorrow; Better Times Are Coming; and many more. The attached companion CD contains 33 of the book's 58 tunes. 128 pages.

March in Ohio

CD ........$15
plus $1.50 S/H

March in Ohio

The CD is composed of dulcimer duets, backed by the occasional bodhran, tamborine, pennywhistle and recorder. Selections range from renaissance to fiddle tunes to 60's surf music. Staying within the bounds of traditional music, the selections on the CD are as diverse as Ohio weather in March. The title song, "March in Ohio", begins with "In Bleak Midwinter" and finishes with "The Southwind".

SONG LIST:
March in Ohio -- Hangman's Reel -- All I Have to Do is Dream -- Shoes for Baby Jesus -- Banks of Ohio -- Wayfaring Stranger -- Crucharain's Cross -- Westphalia Waltz -- Fisher's Hornpipe -- Daggett's Revenge -- Jenny Pluck Pears -- Shad the Rumble -- Boatman Dance -- Battle Hymn of the Republic -- Kupari Eva -- Nonesuch -- Amazing Grace

"If you have not yet heard this new CD, I encourage you to add it to your collection. This is a very talented couple, as most of you already know, and they have put together an excellent package of tunes and instrumentations. You're gonna love Missy's bass dulcimer! Get in touch with the Strothers' and order one...very nice stuff!"
-- Ed Foley

"Hi Guys,
I have listened to your CD several times now and I really like it, the overall quality is as good as any of my others. I like all the songs especially March in Ohio, Crucharain's Cross, Fisher's Hornpipe, and Daggett's Revenge. The first time I heard your Boatman arrangement I didn't like but now that I have heard it a few times I like it as well as the others. I think you have a good CD that you can be proud of. I don't think I have ever heard March in Ohio before but that is a beautiful song. Congrats on a good job."
--Dave and Cookie, Baltimore, Ohio

"The Strother's didn't bother tackling songs in D and the DAd tuning for their first album. None of that. They experiment in this CD, something I probably wouldn't have the nerve to do. There are interesting keys for MD such as Em even G, and tunings, such as DGd (Banks of the Ohio), and AAd (Amazing Grace).
All this non-D work adds a richness to these mostly familiar songs that is refreshing, and is further proof of the versatility of the mountain dulcimer. For instance, most have probably heard Wayfaring Stranger many times, but in Em, it's a striking song...and you might fall in love with it again. Westfalia Waltz in G brings it up in pitch and is lovely.
Instrument-wise, the CD features mountain dulcimer (bass, and normal), but there is banjimer, tenor recorder, penny whistle and bodhrán to round out the mix. All instruments are played by Tom and Missy. I like the simplicity of the instrumentation because you can really hear the dulcimers without them getting lost in the crowd.
I recommend this CD as an addition to your collection. If you have any interest in expanding to minor keys and alternative tunings, consider this CD a primer. If you want a collection of songs that showcase the mountain dulcimer, this is it. This CD is suitable for learning from (the tempos are great), or for listening to at home as background music."

Tails & Tunes Along Rugby Creek

shopping cart image Tails & Tunes Along Rugby Creek is a musical product to benefit a horse rescue in Rugby, Virginia. All proceeds go to the rescue which is behind Wayne Henderson's workshop. The CD has 14 old timey Virginia tunes and several musicians participated in the project. All these musicians donated their time & talent for this project. This project evolved much like to crooked road in Virginia & I definitely left a piece of my heart there. It is amazing how much the music is celebrated by the folks of Virginia. If you want to learn more about the rescue go to the Rugby Creek Website.

Also available are 22 x 17 inch prints of the book cover. Cost is $20 plus $5 shipping.

Poster of Tails and Tunes

"I just had to write the list and mention the CD/book combination by Vicki Stuckert. I originally ordered it because of the magic words 'horse rescue', which, to a horse lover, is reason enough. But once having received it, I must say that I was very impressed and think it is terrific! Vicki did a wonderful job of collecting the tunes. There are many many tunes in the book and on the CD which I have not heard before, and to me, that is a rare treasure! The tunes have the "feel" of genuine folk songs, which I believe most of them are. Finding that many "new" folk songs all together is wonderful! I've been having a great time learning new tunes and just playing the CD for "fun". Thanks Vicki. I know it was alot of work, but a labor of love, and I, for one, have found great pleasure from it."
-- Jean Grosch

Song List for the Book includes
10 more songs plus what is on the CD:
Cowboy Waltz -- Doney Gal -- East Virginia -- I Ride An Old Paint -- New River Train -- Old Molly Hare -- Rosewood Casket -- Sally Ann -- The Trail of the Lonesome Pine -- Zebra Dun

"The arrangements are great, with a wide variety of tunes, and the book layout is very nicely done. The front and back cover drawings, when opened out, are one continuous picture - which I would not have noticed without Vicki's comment. How fortunate she was to have an artist on the team too! Definitely a labor of love. I am enjoying the music on the CD as much as the musicians were, I'm sure... it sounds like they were having a great time jamming!"
-- Ruth Randle

Song List for the CD includes:
Carry Me back to Old Virginny -- The Appaloosa Trail -- The Ballad of Caty Sage -- Clinch MT Backstep -- Deep Settled Peace -- My Home's Across the Blue Ridge Mountains -- The Old Gospel Ship -- Rose Hill Train -- Sally Goodin' -- Sarah Hogan -- The Salet Song -- The Story of Freda Bolt -- Sugar in the Gourd -- Wreck of the Old 97

Billy The Kid -- Bury Me Not On The Lone Prairie -- Cowboy Jack (2 versions) -- Cowboy Waltz -- Doney Gal -- Good-Bye Old Paint -- I Ride And Old Paint (2 versions) -- Jesse James (2 versions) -- Night Herding Song -- Streets of Loredo -- Cowboy's Heaven -- Cowboy's Lament -- Cowboy's Meditation -- and 20 others

"I've been enjoying your book. It is a treasure. I am in awe of all the work you put into the research, pictures and music. Thank you for adding to the mountain dulcimer legacy."
-- Gail West

"Vicki has spent many hours of her time compiling this tab book of Cowboy tunes which contains 36 tunes and even includes a CD. The arrangements are really cool and the song selection is great. You will have heard some of these tunes, many you will not have heard. But that is the purpose of the CD, eh? The book has many photos throughout as well as some neat graphics. A total of 138 pages. Besides having some great music and a CD of that music, this is a work that also rivals that of many song catchers. Vicki has documented many songs that have possibly not seen the light of day for quite a while. And by including them in her book, they are now, once again, available to those who are interested."
-- John Sackenheim

"BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!! What a wonderful collection of songs and tunes! The history and the photos are such a bonus. I think you should be charging at least $25 for this book and CD. That is the going rate for most of the tablature books with CD. This one is astronomical in size.
The ballad of Billy the Kid is the one I heard Ken Bloom sing at Cullowhee, NC in 2004 and have coveted a copy since that time. That is where I met Gary Sager. I saw him again this year at the same workshop.
Can hardly wait for Vol. II."
